China's Growing Role in Global Cardiovascular Medicine: From Shanghai to the World

Professor Junbo Ge's election as World Heart Federation President-Elect highlights a broader story of international cardiovascular collaboration, research and professional exchange.

A milestone within a larger story

On 12 October 2026, the World Heart Federation (WHF) officially announced that Professor Junbo Ge of Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, had been elected President-Elect for the 2027–2028 term. The WHF said the newly elected board members will take office in January 2027. [3]

The announcement is an important development in the international visibility of Chinese cardiovascular medicine. The broader story is how China's cardiology community has expanded research and professional networks, developed specialist capabilities and participated more actively in global medical exchange.

A European Heart Journal article published on 7 October 2026 offers a professional perspective on that trajectory. From Shanghai to the world: the Oriental Congress of Cardiology 20 years in traces the evolution of the Oriental Congress of Cardiology (OCC), a major cardiovascular meeting associated with Professor Ge and colleagues. [1]

From a Shanghai conference to an international meeting

According to the European Heart Journal account, the OCC grew from approximately 1,400 participants across nine forums in 2007 to nearly 20,000 physicians in 2026. The 2026 program included around 30 forums, 368 sessions and 2,741 speakers and chairs from 22 countries and regions. [1]

These figures describe the expansion of a forum in which clinicians, researchers and medical educators exchange ideas. A larger international meeting does not by itself demonstrate better clinical outcomes. It does, however, illustrate growing connections between Chinese cardiovascular specialists and colleagues abroad.

Clinical expertise, research and professional exchange

Cardiovascular medicine is not defined by one procedure or one institution. It includes prevention, imaging, emergency response, catheter-based interventions, surgery, rehabilitation and long-term disease management.

The European Society of Cardiology's 2026 congress record lists Professor Ge as a speaker in the fireside chat East meets West—a new era for global clinical cardiology. This is evidence of professional participation and exchange. It is not clinical trial evidence, regulatory approval or proof that a treatment is superior. [2]

For patients, the practical value of a healthcare system depends not only on advanced equipment and specialist skills, but also on appropriate diagnosis, clear treatment decisions and reliable follow-up. Our separate advanced cardiac procedures evidence map examines procedure-specific evidence and its limits.

What the World Heart Federation leadership announcement signifies

The WHF is a global cardiovascular health organization focused on prevention, equitable access, advocacy and collaboration. Its official 12 October announcement confirms Professor Ge as President-Elect for the 2027–2028 term. The WHF's current-board page may continue to show the serving board until the newly elected members take office in January 2027. [3] [4]

The appointment is a notable recognition of Professor Ge's professional standing and China's participation in international cardiovascular health discussions. Its significance is institutional and professional. It is not an endorsement of a particular hospital, service provider or treatment for an individual patient.

What this means for international patients

International recognition can be a reason to learn more about cardiovascular care in China. It is not a substitute for patient-specific medical evidence or review of the relevant clinical team.

  • Which specialist or multidisciplinary team is most appropriate for the diagnosis?
  • What evidence supports the proposed procedure or treatment?
  • What relevant experience and outcomes can the institution substantiate?
  • How will complications, rehabilitation and postoperative follow-up be managed?
  • What medical records are needed before an initial specialist review?

International professional recognition is one signal. Patients should still examine the cardiac-care pathway and understand how international patients can prepare for healthcare access in China.

MedVoyage China's perspective: turning awareness into appropriate access

MedVoyage China helps international patients understand and navigate healthcare options in China. Our role is non-clinical: organizing records, facilitating inquiries about appropriate specialist evaluation, coordinating appointments and supporting practical care arrangements.

The next step for a patient is not to choose treatment from a headline, but to understand whether an appropriate institutional and specialist evaluation is available for the specific condition.

Questions & answers

Has Professor Junbo Ge become President of the World Heart Federation?

No. The World Heart Federation announced his election as President-Elect for the 2027–2028 term. The WHF says the newly elected board members will take office in January 2027. President-Elect is not the same as serving as the current President.

Does this appointment show that cardiac surgery in China is better than elsewhere?

No. Professional leadership and clinical treatment outcomes are different kinds of evidence. Treatment decisions require condition-specific evaluation, reliable clinical data and review by an appropriate specialist team.

Can international patients seek cardiovascular specialist evaluation in China?

International patients may inquire about specialist evaluation, subject to institutional arrangements, eligibility and applicable rules. The suitability of an institution and any proposed care must be assessed for the individual case.
